Review of Louis Vuitton Fall-Winter 2021 Show

Updated: Jul 31

The Louis Vuitton Women’s Fall Winter show was streamed live on March 10th 2021. The Louvre opened its doors to Nicolas Ghesquière once again to present his new ready-to-wear collection.

The ensembles, music, setting and camera-work all come together in a story of drama, anticipation, tension, contrast and variety

Nicolas brings us a collection a little different from the sculpted, futuristic silhouettes and Parisian chic he has come to be acclaimed for but maintains his typical time-travelling aesthetic.

Modern designs reflect historical imagery of ancient Greece and Rome. Various statues, coins, architecture and antique jewels are displayed on jackets, shirts and handbags.

Ensembles come face to face in battles of black versus white, gold versus silver, warm versus cold, light versus dark.

Models are framed by high arches, tall statues and grounding colours achieving perfect symmetry and colour coordination.

In every way possible, Nicolas Ghesquière experiments with the well-known phenomenon that symmetry directly correlates to perfect beauty (and comes close to success).

An oversized jacket, a long shirt, a skirt peeking out from beneath and some element of shimmer or sparkle seems to be one trusted formula.

As the show progresses, symmetry becomes not just a theme but a rule until the introduction of asymmetrical skirts break through.

In a single undisturbed cut, models are switched, a new ensemble is showcased in a new frame in this fast-paced journey of constant movement and consistent rhythm.

We see short skirts cut at the pleats, reminiscent of ancient roman armour, and shoes up to the knee depicting a design reminiscent of an ancient roman sandal, only with a modern touch – a little ribbon bow.

On the other side of the spectrum we see models sporting oversized coats, ski goggles laying loose around their necks, a more modern depiction of winter.

Silhouettes move from full and bulky to delicate and flattering, long boots and skirts cut down to show more skin in youthful, modern designs.

From ensembles of baggy black leather and studs and definitive girl boss vibes, there is a look for every personality.
