Details continue to emerge, and tributes continue to pour onto social media, after, musician, Liam Payne, previously of One Direction, reportedly fell to his death from his third-floor hotel balcony in Buenos Aires on Wednesday evening.
Investigation into the “unexplained” death has begun with the questioning of witnesses who were present at the hotel. An autopsy was carried out late last night and he is said to have suffered up to 25 severe injuries, “incompatible with life”, including a fracture at the base of the skull and internal and external haemorrhaging.
Alberto Crescenti, head of the state emergency medical system, said on Argentinian television that Payne fell into a courtyard of the CasaSur Hotel but declined to answer further questions about the nature of the incident, however, at this time, no evidence has been found to suggest any involvement of third parties.
A spokesperson for the security ministry of Buenos Aires municipality, said police were called to the hotel in response to an "aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol".
A transcript of the call has since been released and we now know that the hotel worker who called it in had shared with them worries of exactly this turn of events, suggesting his life may be in danger.
He insists it is urgent, saying: "When he is conscious, he is destroying the entire room, and we need you to send someone"
The singer was in Buenos Aires to attend the concert of former One Direction bandmate Niall Horan, where he was seen dancing only two weeks before.
"It's been a while since me and Niall have spoken. We've got a lot to talk about and I would like to square up a couple things with the boy.” Payne had said.
“No bad vibes or nothing like that, but just, we need to talk."
Numerous early reports of the tragedy focus a lot of attention on the Snapchat stories posted by Payne just hours before his death and take note of the slight delay that see his current girlfriend, Kate Cassidy, beside him when she had in fact travelled back to her home in Miami without him.
The couple had travelled to South America together earlier this month to watch the concert, and extended their stay, residing at a friend's home together. Cassidy took to TikTok to say she hates staying in one place for too long and it was time to go home. At which point, it seems, Liam checked into the hotel in question, and two days later the event occurred.
Drugs were found in Payne’s room, the source of which is still unknown, that police suspect he had partaken in, supposedly with two women who were seen leaving his room, just before his fatal fall.
It was understood that Payne, at times, struggled with the pressures and public criticism that came with his level of fame, leading to alcohol and prescription drug addictions and self-described suicidal thoughts and acute agoraphobia, since the days of X-Factor.
Abstract behaviour caught the eye of witnesses online in recent years and after a 2022 appearance on Logan Paul's podcast in which he criticized One Direction and Malik, to which Louis Tomlinson commented, saying Paul knew what he was doing, Liam went into rehab.
In a 2019 BBC interview, he said, on his struggles with alcohol: "It was very erratic behaviour on my part", adding his family had been "very worried", a description unfortunately directly mirrored in the events of Wednesday evening, according to local media reports and the police call transcripts.
In the lead up to his passing, Liam’s ex-fiancée, Maya Henry, had issued him a cease-and-desist notice earlier this week, accusing him of repeatedly contacting her and her loved ones.
In an interview with The Internet Is Dead, Maya talks about messages from Liam to her and her mom, saying if she didn’t help him he was going to die, branding them manipulation tactics.
Henry, 23, released a novel earlier this year “inspired by true events”, that appears to draw specifically from their relationship.
Titled “Looking Forward”, this fictional novel follows the story of Mallory, an aspiring model who falls in love with Oliver, a former boy band member who transforms from a clean-cut pop star to an unpredictable addict with a volatile temper.
An integral mind behind some of the bands most iconic lyrics and melodies, and in a lot of ways a leader to his bandmates towards the beginning of their journey, Liam Payne will be remembered mostly for his work with One Direction.
The news has hit ‘Direction-ers’ particularly hard, many of them taking to social media in recent hours to offer support to one another as well as condolences to his friends and family, sharing what it meant to them to grow up listening to his music.
Many will now mourn the dream reunion they have been anticipating since the band began an indefinite hiatus in 2016. On this topic, Louis Tomlinson arguably said it best when he said “all together or nothing for me”.
Payne’s entrance into the music industry was truly inspirational, first auditioning for the X Factor aged 14, in 2008, and being turned away, to then come back to auditions again in 2010, this time gaining a spot in the competition, and eventually placing him in beloved boy band, One Direction.
During the six years they were together, One Direction had six top 10 hits on the Billboard charts, as well as five Billboard Music Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards, six Brit Awards and more.
