Living the Dream: Georgie Parfitt reflects on her first year with the San Diego Ballet

Updated: Sep 24

We last left Parfitt joining the San Diego Ballet Company. Now, after moving to America for some time in earlier years due to her father’s job, she has returned with her own ambitions.

I decided to check in with Georgie again over a year after our first interview to see what her time at San Diego Ballet had been like so far.

A post from Georgie's instagram account celebrating World Ballet Day. Tagged is her sister, Lucy, who took the photo.

OBSTACLES: judgement, diet and organisation

Georgie admitted to facing multiple obstacles since her move, particularly highlighting auditioning. It is ‘always’ an obstacle because of the rejection many must face ‘due to your height or even hair colour’. She also revealed one major challenge when being on tour is finding food that will fuel you.‘My friends and I can often end up living off of trail mix.’ But, it has a happy ending, Parfitt gave her number one tip for overcoming obstacles: staying organised. ‘I always try to plan ahead and buy foods that will keep me going’ So, to aspiring dancers, Georgie Parfitt has given this advice: ‘Keep working hard and don’t be discouraged! There will always be challenges but the end results makes it all worth it.’

BENEFITS: memories made, dreams fulfilled, sights seen, lessons learned

Georgie clearly values her previous experiences, saying a Kennith MacMillan ballet called ‘Elite Syncopations' performed at her graduation ‘will always bring back fond memories.’ However, she shows clear excitement for what is ahead. Particularly her dream of playing a fairy in a ballet which will soon become reality in a performance of ‘A Midsummers Night’s Dream’. Much like Luca Farkas at Italia Conti, Georgie Parfitt recognised the importance of learning how to behave in a company environment, naming it her most valuable lesson from dance teacher, Terry Wright, despite use of harsh, strict teaching methods. Georgie said it helped her make friends and earn respect early on, naming Wright her most influential teacher. Overall, Parfitt loves living in San Diego. ‘Being so close to the beach but also a city has been amazing and being able to walk by the beach every day is definitely one of my favourite things about living here.’
